The trek begins before dawn, when the slopes of Mount Batur are still dark and the trail is lit only by flashlights. A local guide leads the way at a steady pace, with stops to rest as you climb across volcanic ground. Near the summit, the sky begins to brighten over the caldera and Lake Batur. On a clear morning, the panorama stretches towards Mount Agung and, beyond the water on Lombok, Mount Rinjani. After time to watch the sunrise and take photographs, you descend by the same mountain route - tired, dusty, and carrying one of the most memorable mornings of the trip.

- Mount Batur's summit is about 1,717 metres above sea level
- The full ascent and descent usually takes around 4–5 hours and requires a moderate level of fitness
- The trail includes steep, uneven volcanic ground and can become slippery after rain
- Cloud, fog, wind, or rain may limit the sunrise view even when the trek goes ahead
